Madeira Hiking and Levada WalksThe island of Madeira

The island of Madeira, with its spectacular scenery and tranquillity, is a heaven for walkers and nature-lovers. Its a green subtropical paradise of volcanic origin. Few walking destinations offer such variety with picturesque villages, rugged peaks, alpine plateaus, waterfalls and gorges, verdant valleys, orchards full of cherries, bananas and other fruit, wild flowers in abundance and an unspoilt coastline with towering sea cliffs. You can enjoy walking here all year round, because Madeira's temperature only varies a few degrees either side of 20ºC.

The unique Madeira Levadas (these are water channels that run through the mountains, with narrow paths alongside, for the workers to maintain them.) are simply exhilarating and superb. They are easily followed as they wind around the hillsides. Sometimes they pass through small tunnels and a torch may be necessary. Mountain hikes and levada walks allow you to explore most of the island on your holiday.

Typical Nights

Enjoy a fun evening of Folklore and Fado at a Typical Madeira Restaurant with the typical espetada. Espetada is a four foot skewer of Chicken or Tender Cubes of Beef , rubbed in rock salt and marinated in garlic and bay leaves, cooked over a wooden fire, accompanied by deep fried maize or cornmeal flour mixed with lard, water and herbs. It is cut into cubes and deep fried, potatoes, mixed salad and a basket of fresh homemade bread, spread with or without garlic butter all warmed in the oven – a delicious accompaniment.

The Wine, Beer or Soft drinks are Supplied Unlimited.

During dinner, sitting on long rows of tables, you will be entertained with a Live Performance of Fado and later in the Evening the Folklore Dancers – Madeira’s traditional dance, reflects the burdens of rural patterns of work, the carrier’s dance. The dancers bend beneath the weight of imaginary stacks of sugar cane, or baskets of bananas, carried along the islands steep paths, or the rhythmic stamping of the dancers feet reflects the custom of crushing grapes for wine with bare feet. Some of the dances, back to the time of Moorish slavery and others, where introduced to the island by immigrants from the north of Portugal. After dinner the dancers encourage people to come on to the stage and join in the performance.

Guests are Invited to join in.

You don’t have to worry about finding the Restaurant or Getting Back to your Hotel because it is Included in the Price.

Santana

Our next stop on this madeira excursion, takes us to a beautiful village on the north coast, santana. Characterized by its small thatched triangular houses, that are built of natural stone and thatched with straw. Set amid a profusion of flowers these picturesque houses have served the locals for centuries as stables and dwellings. Santana is probably one of the most emblematic tourist areas in Madeira Island. All is due to theses houses where its people used to live in former times, which ended up by becomnig the greeting card by excellence ofthe destination. Depending on which day you do this we will either stop for lunch here or in the next village of faital.
